Observation: Alertness and Withdrawal

How does your child respond to the stimuli in the room? Can you tell if your baby is ready to play? What signals does he/she send to engage you? Look for signs of active or quiet alertness. Smiling, making eye contact, reaching out are signs of active alertness. A quiet alert baby is awake and attentive but prefers to observe.
Does your baby show signs of withdrawal? Watch for vacant staring, turning away, a furrowed brow. What signals does he/she send to withdraw from interaction?
