Observation: Object Permanence
Observation by: Observation of: Date: Age:
Try hiding an object. How does your child react? (Depending on age your child may or may not be ready for this developmentally.) When your child can find an object that you have hidden under something (be sure he/she is paying attention and sees you hide it), try some variations. As awareness grows, try hiding it in two different places (first one place, then again, then a new place.) Later, try hiding it inside something. Always let the baby see what you are doing. Notice the changes that occur at different ages over time.
What other games or play does your baby enjoy right now?
Stranger awareness is as natural a part of growth and development as learning motor skills. What may seem to be problematic behavior is actually an indication that the child is maturing emotionally, cognitively and socially, and signals the child'’ ability to hypothesize and think. Each child has his/her own style and level of externalizing feelings and coping. Take some time to look for signs of stranger (or separation) awareness in our group. How is the anxiety manifested? How does the child cope?
